On Monday, an unidentified man in his 30s or 40s jumped over the railing 9 metres above the falls and was swept over in front of hundreds of Victoria Day witnesses in an apparent suicide attempt. He swam to shore and was rescued, suffering gashes to his head and shoulder, a collapsed lung and chest and rib injuries.
He is listed in serious condition at Hamilton General Hospital.
In 2003, unemployed auto worker Kirk Jones, of Canton, Mich., survived in a stunt, wearing only his street clothes.
And three years ago, an unidentified Canadian man endured the fall and swam until rescuers saved him.
In 1960, 7-year-old Roger Woodward survived wearing a life jacket, following a boating accident that killed a man.
